Two Car Garage Size

Two-car modular garages come in various sizes, ranging from a compact 20×20 feet to a spacious 32×48 feet. (Not all builders offer every size, so it's best to check with your local builder for their options.)

So, how do you determine which modular garage size will best suit your needs? (And what exactly are modular garages?)

Choosing the correct dimensions for your two-car garage is crucial since it takes work to modify once built. Having enough space is essential for your overall satisfaction with the garage. If you only have one vehicle, consider reading our "Single Car Garage Sizes" article for garages explicitly designed for one car.

Common Two-Car Garage Dimensions

Two-car modular garages are available in various sizes. The size you choose will mainly depend on the size of your property and how much additional storage space you need beyond just parking your vehicles.

Two-Car Garage Dimensions: Width

A typical width for a modular two-car garage ranges from 24 to 28 feet. This width provides enough space to park your cars comfortably and lets you get in and out without hitting your car doors against the walls. While a 20-foot-wide garage can work, it may feel cramped when entering or exiting your vehicle. On the other hand, widths more significant than 28 feet may lead to restrictions and additional shipping costs. Therefore, 24 to 28 feet is ideal for a two-car modular garage.

Two-Car Garage Dimensions: Length

The standard length for a two-car garage is between 20 and 40 feet. If your garage is shorter than 20 feet, you may experience space limitations when parking your cars. Conversely, lengths exceeding 40 feet can challenge builders regarding size and weight when moving the garage. Additionally, more extended garages may incur extra fees during delivery.

Two-Car Garage Dimensions: Wall Height

The standard wall height for a two-car garage is typically 8 feet. This height creates a spacious interior that doesn't feel cramped. While it's possible to have taller walls, be mindful that height restrictions for delivery may come into play if you're purchasing a modular two-car garage. To pass under bridges and overpasses, shippers need to keep the building's height on the trailer below about 13 feet 6 inches. Suppose your two-car garage requires a wall height significantly higher than 8 feet. In that case, consider a prefab or stick-built garage instead of a modular one.

Standard Two-Car Garage Sizes

A standard two-car garage typically measures between 24×24 feet (576 sq. ft.) and 24×30 feet (720 sq. ft.). While these sizes are standard, the best option depends on the types of vehicles you want to store and how much additional storage space you need.

For example, a 20×20-foot two-car garage is large enough to park two vehicles but offers very little extra space for storage. Suppose you're considering building a two-car garage. In that case, it's a good idea to incorporate storage into the design rather than building a separate storage shed later.

Here are two standard two-car garage sizes to help you visualize how much storage space you might have after parking your vehicles:
24×24 Modular Garage

If you need extra room for a workshop or storage and parking space, a more prominent option like a 28×40 modular two-car garage might be ideal. This site allows you to park your cars while still having plenty of space left for storage or pursuing your hobbies.

Take a Moment to Get It Right

Before you order your two-car modular garage, take some time to consider how much extra storage or workspace you need. Research the critical features of metal storage sheds and wooden garages (as we build both) to ensure you choose a high-quality structure. A two-car garage can be very versatile and a worthwhile investment. Planning will help you avoid disappointment with the final result.

Stick-Built, Prefab, and Modular Garages

There are several methods for building two-car garages. The best method for you will depend mainly on the size of the garage you want.

"Stick-Built" 2-Car Garages

The first building method is called "stick-built." This term refers to entirely constructed on-site garages starting from the ground up. All the walls, rafters, and other components are assembled and erected right where the garage will stand. Builders typically use this method for homes and garages that are too large or complicated to be delivered by truck.

Prefab 2-Car Garages

Another building method is called the prefab method. In this approach, the walls and trusses are "prefabricated" in a factory and then transported to the building site. At the site, a lift or crane positions the walls and trusses. This method is preferred for its efficiency since assembling garage components in a factory is often quicker than doing it on-site.
The prefab method can accommodate various garage sizes and is particularly useful for multi-story garages or those designed with full-width engineered trusses. It's also a great option to eliminate interior load-bearing walls.

Modular 2-Car Garages

The third construction method is the modular approach. A modular garage is built in two sections or halves, then delivered to the site and assembled to create a single building. It typically features a center load-bearing wall with a beam to support the roof.

This method is one of the most cost-effective options, but it is best suited for garages no larger than 32 feet wide and 48 feet long. Additionally, the walls cannot exceed roughly 8 feet in height due to restrictions when traveling under bridges and overpasses.
A modular garage might be the right choice for you if:

  • You want the most affordable garage option.
  • You don't need a garage with a second story.
  • You aren't storing large vehicles, like a box truck or RV.
  • Your garage size doesn't need to be larger than 32 feet by 48 feet.

Two-Story Garages

Two-car garages can also be designed with two stories. This option is popular among homeowners who need extra storage, workspace, or living space above the garage. Due to the height and weight limitations involved in transporting them, two-story garages are typically built using the stick-built or prefab methods.

In contrast, many garages are single-story. These one-story, two-car garages can often be constructed and delivered as modular garages, making them a cost-effective solution for homeowners looking to increase their parking and storage space.
